Preparing for the safety commission visit

The periodic visit to a hotel typically comes round every three years, under article GE 4 of the order of 25 June 1980. What is decided on the day is mostly prepared in the months before.

This guide helps you understand the rules; it is not legal advice. What applies to your hotel depends on its category, how many people it can hold, and what the local safety commission has required. Check the cited texts before you act on them.

What gets looked at first

The safety register and the verification reports. Not the elegance of your filing, but its existence: a date of last check, a report that proves it, and what happened to the items the commission raised last time (the réserves).

  • The verification reports, in their original form
  • Items raised last time, and the proof they were fixed
  • Staff training certificates

An item still open weighs more than a late check

A late check is fixed by booking it. An item raised three years ago and still open says something else: that the report was filed without being read. It is the line an inspector re-reads first.

The pack you wish you had the night before

An index, the list of checks with their dates, and the source certificates appended. Assembled by hand it takes an afternoon and one is always missing. With Paco, the pack comes out in one click from your list, already current. You can also send the inspector a link to a live page. The link expires, and you can cancel it.

Common questions

Does the commission give notice?

The periodic visit is announced, which leaves time to gather the documents. Which is exactly why it is better to have nothing left to gather.

Be ready without preparing

The pack already exists if your list is kept current.
